Interior Design vs. Interior Styling: What’s the Difference
When people hear “interior design”, they often picture moodboards, cushions, and vases on open shelves.
But that’s only a tiny slice of what goes into creating a home that actually works.
Interior design and interior styling are two completely different services - both valuable in their own right, but with very different purposes, processes, and outcomes.
If you’re dreaming about your renovation, extension, or new build, understanding the difference will help you find the right professional for your project, and save you time, money, and a few “oops” moments along the way.
So, what does an Interior Designer actually do?
An interior designer looks at the bones of your home - how the spaces flow, how natural light moves through, where you’ll store things, and how to make every room feel intentional and functional.
My role as a Building and Interior Designer is to:
Design custom joinery (think kitchens, vanities, wardrobes, studies)
Select materials, finishes, fittings, and fixtures
Develop floor plans and elevations
Support trades like builders, electricians, and joiners
Create detailed drawings and specifications that guide construction
Ensure everything ties together seamlessly with your home’s structure and design
In short, interior design - like building design - is the bridge between concept and construction. It’s about function, flow, and form, and it can be very technical.
And what about Interior Styling?
Interior styling comes after the design is built.
A stylist focuses on the final layer - how your home looks and feels once the walls are up, the floors are down, and the joinery’s installed.
Stylists are brilliant at:
Choosing furniture, rugs, cushions, and décor
Arranging spaces for visual balance
Adding colour, texture, and personality
Making your home photo-ready or sale-ready
Why I don’t focus on styling (and what I do instead)
Most of my work happens much earlier in the journey.
When I meet clients, we’re usually making big decisions - like how the kitchen connects to the dining area, or how to make a compact ensuite feel spacious and serene.
I help you:
Refine your ideas into a cohesive vision
Choose finishes that work in harmony
Create detailed drawings that builders and joiners can follow (and are compliant).
Future-proof your home so it feels right for years to come
You can always bring in a stylist later to add the finishing touches, but my focus is to make sure the foundation is beautiful, functional, and true to you.
Why it matters
When design and styling get blurred, expectations can too.
If you’re only wanting help with furniture, art, or accessories, a stylist is your go-to.
If you’re planning a renovation, extension, or new build, you need a designer.
Hiring the right person at the right stage can save you costly changes, rushed decisions, and endless Pinterest confusion.
The takeaway
Interior design shapes the structure and story of your home.
Interior styling adds the personality and polish.
Both matter -and sometimes overlap a little - but if you’re planning to build, extend, or renovate, make sure you start with design.
That’s where your dream home truly begins.
