Bathroom Fixture Heights 101: Standard Mounting Heights for Towel Rails, Mirrors & More (Australian Guide)

When you're planning a bathroom renovation, getting the mounting heights right for your fixtures makes the difference between a space that works beautifully and one that frustrates you daily.

Let's talk about some things you should consider when deciding on the mounting heights in your bathroom.

If you're in the early stages of planning a bathroom renovation, these are exactly the kinds of details I help clients navigate as part of my interior design service.

What are mounting heights?

Don't worry if you're not sure what this means - it just refers to how high or low you should mount items like your taps, shower, towel rails, hooks, mirrors, and light fixtures. If you're working with a building or interior designer, these details are part of the documentation process. But if you're briefing a tiler or builder yourself, this guide will help you communicate clearly.

Consider who's using the space

Before you lock in any measurements, think about:

  • The height of the people using the bathroom (aim for ~167cm as a comfortable average)

  • Whether children or elderly family members need access

  • The size and layout of your bathroom - higher placements create the illusion of space in smaller bathrooms, while in a larger bathroom, hanging things lower can make the space feel more cozy and intimate.

Think about what you want to install and make sure that everything is at a comfortable height for you to use. Hanging a towel rail at around 1050-1200mm from the floor makes it easy to grab a towel after washing your hands or taking a shower.

Mirrors

A good height range for mirrors is between 1200-1300mm above the floor, if over a vanity. This height allows most people to see their reflection comfortably and provides a good balance between function and aesthetics. This also applies to mirrored cabinets. However, if you are installing a full length mirror, you would need to mount it much lower, depending on the height of the mirror, the room and the person normally using it.

Towel rails and taps

These accessories are typically mounted at a height of around 1050mm. This height ensures that towels are within easy reach and that taps are at a comfortable height for use. Remember to install your taps away from your shower head so that you don’t get wet turning them on! You may want to install your hand towel rail or hook a little higher at 1100-1200mm when next to your vanity.

Splashback heights

For splashbacks, it's best to have a minimum height of 1200mm. This height will protect your walls from water damage and make cleaning up any spills or splashes a breeze. Of course, you can also take your tiles to the ceiling for a luxe, hotel feel. The NCC states that you need a minimum 150 mm water-resistant vertical surface directly above the edge of the basin or vanity top.

Shower Heads

Consider the height of the tallest person who will be using the shower. A good height range for the showerhead is between 2000-2200mm above the floor, which allows most people to stand comfortably underneath it.

Shower Hose

For shower hose rails, a height of around 1000-1100mm is a good range to aim for, as it allows easy access to the hose while showering.

Niches and Tiled Shelves / Ledges

The height for niches will depend on what you plan to store in them. If you're using the niche for shampoo and soap bottles, a height of around 900mm above the floor is a good range to aim for, as it allows easy access to these items.

If you're using the niche for decorative items, you may want to consider mounting it slightly higher for better visibility. A general rule of thumb for a niche is 900mm above the floor, 300-450mm high and 600mm wide. The tiles you select will impact this decision. Aim for whole tiles where possible to avoid waste and cut tiles.

For example, if you have a 300 x 600 tile, you might choose to have your niche at 300mm x 600 wide. Or for a 450x900 tile you could create a nich that is a full 450mm tile high and 900mm wide.

Toilet roll holders

Aim for a height of around 550-650mm above the floor. This height ensures that the roll is within easy reach and at a comfortable height for use. Remember to install the holder in a convenient location, within reach of the toilet.

Vanity heights

Finally, for vanities, the standard benchtop height should be 900mm, with the top of the sink at the same height. This height is comfortable for most people to use and provides a good balance between function and style. If you are installing an above counter basin, you may want to lower the vanity slightly and aim for the top of the basin to finish at 950mm.

These are starting points, not rules

Remember, these are just general guidelines, and you should always consider your own needs and preferences when determining the mounting heights in your bathroom. By keeping in mind the purpose of each accessory, the user's comfort, and the layout of your bathroom, you can create a space that's both functional and beautiful.

Planning a bathroom renovation?

Getting these measurements right is one small part of a well-considered bathroom. If you're planning a renovation and want the project to feel intentional, from layout to lighting to finishes, I'd love to help.
